Transition from Fire-Dependent Open Forests: Alternative Ecosystem States in the Southeastern United States

چکیده
Land use and fire exclusion have influenced ecosystems worldwide, resulting in alternative ecosystem states. Here, I provide two examples from the southeastern United States of fire-dependent open pine pine-oak forest loss examine dynamics replacement forests, given continued long-term declines foundation longleaf (Pinus palustris) shortleaf echinata) pines recent increases commercial loblolly taeda) slash elliottii var. elliottii) pines. Shortleaf historically may been dominant on about 32 to 38 million ha, a provisional estimate based historical composition 75% all trees, has decreased 2.5 ha currently; now is 3% trees northern province. Longleaf 30 totaling 1.3 contemporary forests southern The initial transition closed primarily comprised broadleaf species, was countered by conversion plantations. Loblolly accounts for 37% trees. Loss their tree species affect associated biodiversity, or that succeed under disturbance.

Health System Reform in the United States
In 2010, the United States adopted its first-ever comprehensive set of health system reforms in the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Implementation of the law, though politically contentious and controversial, has now reached a stage where reversal of most elements of the law is no longer feasible. The controversial portions of the law that expand affordable health insurance coverage to most U.S. cit...

within the national forests of the west, is one of the most contentious natural resource issues in the US today. One recent response to the controversy is the Healthy Forests Restoration Act (HFRA) of 2003 (Public Law 108-V148). This law has potentially profound consequences for forests and their biodiversity and must therefore be implemented on the basis of the best scientific information and ...
متن کاملForests in the United States
The key words in forest management for the 2 I st century are “sustainable management”. In this paper we present an overview of the nature of outdoor recreation demand growth in the United States and its significance in light of the need to sustain the nation’s forests. We show that outdoor recreation demand is growing faster now than at any time in the last five decades. Accelerated management...
متن کاملOn the difference in the net ecosystem exchange of CO2 between deciduous and evergreen forests in the southeastern United States.
The southeastern United States is experiencing a rapid regional increase in the ratio of pine to deciduous forest ecosystems at the same time it is experiencing changes in climate. This study is focused on exploring how these shifts will affect the carbon sink capacity of southeastern US forests, which we show here are among the strongest carbon sinks in the continental United States. Using eig...
